Howdunit - How Crimes are Committed and Solved, is a primer for writers of police procedurals, mysteries, and anyone interested in how police and criminals operate.  Edited by John Boertlein, and published by Writer's Digest books, the 29 chapters in Howdunit cover the systems within which cops operate,  how crimes of all sorts are committed, and methods of investigation from surveillance to interrogations.

Alan wrote the second chapter of Howdunit titled, "The American Criminal Justice System."  The chapter explains the three basic parts of the American system of criminal justice: the police, the courts, and corrections.  The rules and laws the police and courts must follow are all designed to protect the rights of the accused, and by extension, all American citizens.
